Bitcoin Halving: A Pre-Programmed Reduction in Miner Rewards
Scheduled by Block Height, Not Date
Every 210,000 Blocks
The Bitcoin halving is a pre-programmed event that reduces the rewards that miners receive for validating transactions. It occurs approximately every 210,000 blocks, or about every four years. The next halving is expected to occur in 2024 at block 840,000.
The halving is designed to control the supply of Bitcoin and maintain its value. As the number of Bitcoins in circulation increases, the rewards for mining decrease. This makes it more difficult to mine Bitcoin and helps to ensure that the supply remains limited.
