Slovak Parliamentary Elections: Pro-Russian Party Wins
Early elections held amid Ukraine war and energy crisis
Voters back Smer party despite pro-Kremlin stance
A populist pro-Moscow party led by former Prime Minister Robert Fico has won Slovakia's parliamentary elections, according to official results released on Sunday.
With almost all votes counted, Fico's Smer party has secured 28.1% of the vote, ahead of the ruling center-right OLaNO party, which won 18.6%.
The elections were held early amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and an energy crisis that has hit Slovakia hard.
Fico's victory is a major setback for the pro-Western government of Prime Minister Eduard Heger, which has been in power since 2020.
