The Secret Love Life of John Dillinger
Beryl Hovious: The Woman Who Married America's Most Infamous Outlaw
Before John Dillinger became a notorious gangster, he was just an ordinary young man in love. In 1924, he married Beryl Hovious, a 16-year-old girl from Mooresville, Indiana. The couple's happiness was short-lived, however, as Dillinger was soon sent to prison for robbery.
A Chance Encounter and a Quick Marriage
Dillinger and Hovious met at a party thrown by some friends of hers. They were instantly drawn to each other, and they began dating soon after. In April 1924, they eloped and got married.
A Longing Letter from Prison
Dillinger was sentenced to four years in prison for his robbery conviction. While incarcerated, he wrote a longing letter to his wife. In the letter, Dillinger expressed his love for Hovious and his hope that they would be reunited one day.
Divorce and a Tragic End
After almost four years in prison, Dillinger was released. He returned to Mooresville and reconciled with Hovious. However, their marriage was not meant to last. In 1929, Hovious filed for divorce, citing Dillinger's criminal lifestyle.
Dillinger went on to become one of America's most notorious criminals. He was killed by the FBI in 1934.
